EMERGENCY TRAVEL DOCUMENT – EU ETD
This Consulate will issue an EU ETD (European Union Emergency Travel Document) to Italian citizens in case of emergency (i.e. a tourist scheduled for imminent departure who loses or has his/her passport stolen).
An EU ETD is valid only for the return trip to Italy or other country of residency (as indicated in A.I.R.E., the registry of Italians living abroad).
An EU ETD is not valid to travel to or take a connecting flight in the United States.
In order to apply for an EU ETD, please call the switchboard on +1 416 977 1566 on working days and during Consulate service hours, while the emergency number +1 416 456 3355 is available from 4pm to 9 pm on working days or on weekends and holidays from 8am to 9pm.
To obtain an ETD, the applicant must attend in person with the following documentation:
- Application form
- Local police report of the loss or theft of the passport;
- Self Declaration to report the loss of theft of your passport to the Consular Office (self declaration for adults; declaration for minors)
- Return ticket to Italy or to other country of residence;
- Two front-facing identical colored photos (35X45mm) on a white background (the head should take up 70% of the entire photo)
- A valid piece of photo ID i.e. identity card, driver’s license, etc. or/and photocopy of the lost/stolen passport. Should none of these be available, it will be necessary for this Consulate to verify the applicant’s identity before issuing the ETD.
The issue of an ETD may be subject to a consular fee (click here to see Consular Fee, link will open in a new tab).
ATTENTION: It is mandatory to return your EU ETD to the competent Authorities
The holder of an EU ETD is required to hand over the document to the border police or another police station upon arrival at its destination, regardless of its residual validity.
If the beneficiary of an EU ETD issued by a consular office travels to a country other than Italy, the holder is required to return the document to the consular office with territorial jurisdiction over the destination.
