If you decide to establish residency in Italy for citizenship purposes, the responsible authorities will be the Italian municipality where you reside.
Once registered in the resident population registry, foreign citizens can initiate the process for citizenship recognition by law (the duration of which is established by law, 180 days in total), by submitting the documentation indicated in Circular K.28.1/1991 of the Italian Ministry of Interior.
The interested party may not use a legal representative or someone else in their place; the interested party must be present in the country.
The request for the “Non-Renunciation” Certificate is made directly by the Italian municipality to the Consulate, exclusively via certified email (PEC). The Consulate’s response to the municipality (not to the interested party) is always and only via certified email, provided the request is correctly formulated.
It is not possible to contact the Consular Office directly regarding procedures carried out by Municipalities or other Consular Offices, as such procedures are beyond our control.
