As of August 3, 2026, the paper version of the Italian identity card will no longer be valid for travel abroad, regardless of the expiration date shown on the back.

Legislative Decree No. 108 of June 26, 2026, introduced some important changes:

  • Unexpired paper identity cards can be used as identification in dealings with the Italian public administration and with entities providing public services, including consulates.
  • In urgent cases, Italian municipalities may issue a temporary identity document valid for travel abroad, which is non-renewable and valid for no more than six months. This document may not be accepted in some foreign countries: check the entry requirements by visiting: Viaggiare Sicuri.

Starting June 1, 2026, Italian citizens residing abroad (AIRE) can also request a CIE from any Italian municipality, as specified by Law no. 11 of January 19, 2026 (it is recommended that you bring your Italian tax code – codice fiscale with you).
