Conversion Law No. 74\/2025<\/a> of\u00a0 Decree Law No. 36\/2025<\/a> amended Article 17, Paragraph 1, of Law No. 91\/1992<\/a>, allowing former citizens residing abroad, in specific cases and for a limited period of time (between July 1, 2025 and December 31, 2027)<\/strong>, to reacquire Italian citizenship by personally signing a declaration before the competent consular officials<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\n

EFFECTS OF REACQUISITION <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The declaration of reacquisition has no retroactive effect<\/strong>: the former citizen reacquires Italian citizenship from the NEXT day after signing the declaration.<\/p>\n

\n

TRANSMISSION OF CITIZENSHIP TO DESCENDANTS <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

With the entry into force of the new legislation, the reacquisition of citizenship DOES NOT<\/strong> allow the automatic acquisition of citizenship by children, even in case they are minors (obviously this applies to adults as well) and living with the parents, if they reside abroad. For these cases, please check the dedicated section<\/a> (page currently being updated).<\/p>\n

\n

LIMITED TEMPORAL WINDOW FOR REACQUISITION<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The declaration of reacquisition by the former citizen must be submitted, together with the necessary documentation, between July 1, 2025 and December 31, 2027<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\n

ELIGIBILITY<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

To be entitled, the following requirements must be met:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. the person must have been born in Italy <\/strong>OR, if born outside Italy, must have been resident in Italy for at least two continuous years<\/strong>;<\/li>\n
  2. the person lost his\/her citizenship before August 16, 1992<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
    \n

    MANDATORY CONSULAR FEE\u00a0 <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    A consular fee (Art. 7C<\/strong>) of\u00a0 250 euros is due, to be paid in Canadian dollars. For information on payment methods, see below \u201cHOW TO APPLY, GET AN APPOINTMENT AND PAY\u201d<\/strong>.\u00a0 For the amount in Canadian dollars, check the Consular Fee<\/a>.<\/p>\n

    DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED FOR REACQUISITION<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    BEWARE<\/strong>: The Consulate does NOT return documents submitted as part of the application.<\/p>\n

    Please read carefully the instructions provided below.<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Application for reacquisition<\/a>, duly filled<\/li>\n
    2. If born in Italy<\/strong>: Extract of birth certificate with marginal notes (NOT a simple birth certificate) issued in the last 5 years<\/strong> by the Italian municipality of birth (see note 1).<\/li>\n
    3. If born abroad <\/strong>(replaces point 2):
      \n3a)<\/strong> Extract of foreign birth certificate<\/strong> (see note 2) apostilled and translated (      click here for more information<\/a>) AND<\/strong>
      \n3b)<\/strong> historical certificate of residence<\/strong> issued in the last 5 years<\/strong> by the last Italian municipality of residence (see note 1).<\/li>\n
    4. in any case<\/strong>: Historical certificate of citizenship<\/strong> issued by the Italian municipality of birth or of last residence. In case of impossibility of issuance by the municipality, said document can be replaced by: copy of an old Italian Passport, Italian Identity card or any other documents issued by the Italian Municipality that specifies previous possession of Italian citizenship (AIRE registration, family registrations or any other declaration specifying\u00a0 possession of Italian citizenship);<\/li>\n
    5. in any case<\/strong>: Foreign naturalization certificate<\/strong>, with these essential details:
      \nA. Name
      \nB. Surname* * (see note 4).
      \nC. Date of birth
      \nD. date (day, month and year) of granting of Canadian citizenship.
      \n(PLEASE NOTE: The \u201cwallet size certificate\u201d DOES NOT include all the required information \u2013 See note n. 3).<\/strong>
      \nIf the person was a minor at the time of naturalization, he\/she must ALSO submit the naturalization certificates of his\/her Italian-born parents. Please note that until March 09, 1975, in Italy legal age was at age 21.<\/li>\n
    6. in any case<\/strong>: copy of the Canadian passport and the Canadian driving license (or other document \u2013 e.g. utilities \u2013 proving your address): if available, Italian ID even if expired.<\/li>\n
    7. Applicant must open a personal account on the online booking platform Prenot@mi<\/a> and provide the registration email address when requesting an appointment <\/strong>(keep reading for further information).<\/li>\n
    8. If the applicant is married\/divorced and these events are not yet registered in Italy, upon repurchase, the applicant must present the marriage certificate and, if applicable, divorce certificate with an apostille and translation. Please see this page<\/a> for instructions on legalizing\/translating both documents.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      NOTES<\/strong><\/p>\n

      (1) For requesting Italian certificates, this form may be used<\/a> and sent, by the person concerned, to the Italian Municipality.
      \nIf the Italian municipality indicates that it is unable to issue the ‘historical citizenship certificate,’ the applicant must then certify this circumstance<\/strong>, including by providing email correspondence with the municipality showing its negative response, and submit alternative documentation suitable to prove the former Italian citizenship<\/strong>\u00a0(for example: a copy of a previous Italian passport).<\/p>\n

      (2) The Canadian (or anyway foreign, for those born elsewhere) birth certificate must be in \u201cCertified Copy of Registration<\/strong>\u201d (long form) format.\u00a0 Please note that the \u201cwallet size\u201d format of birth certificates is NOT valid for registration and therefore cannot be accepted.<\/p>\n

      (3) In case the Canadian naturalization certificate in your possession does NOT show the MANDATORY data (Name, Surname, Date of birth, Day\/Month\/year of naturalization), you may submit (click to get more information) a \u201cSearch of Citizenship Records<\/a>\u201d or an \u201cAccess to information<\/a>\u201d certificate. Please note that the \u201cwallet size naturalization certificate\u201d does not indicate the exact date of naturalization (as the year alone is insufficient) and, as such, does not allow to complete the procedure.<\/p>\n

      (4) *PLEASE NOTE<\/strong>: For WOMEN, <\/strong>if instead of the maiden name the married name appears, a marriage certificate in \u201ccertified copy of registration<\/strong>\u201d (long form)\u00a0 format (or similar foreign document), apostilled and translated (click here for more information<\/a>) must also be submitted.<\/p>\n

      Marriage certificates issued by religious authorities cannot be considered..<\/p>\n

      HOW TO APPLY, GET AN APPOINTMENT AND PAY<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
