FAQs ON ENTRY TO ITALY AND CANADA DURING THE ONGOING COVID-19 EMERGENCY

For entry to Canada

Can I travel to Canada for tourism? No. The Canadian government has barred access to all visitors from foreign countries, including Italy, because of the Covid-19 epidemic. Exceptions are: Canadian citizens or permanent residents (with PR card), their spouses or common law partners, their parents, and their dependent children. A very limited number of exceptions may be made for essential workers. More information is available at the Official canadian government website. All persons who are permitted to enter Canada are obliged to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival.

When will the Canadian border re-open? It is not possible to provide a date at the present time.

Can I apply for a work or study visa to Canada even if the border is currently closed? For questions regarding visas to Canada, please contact the Canadian Embassy or Consulate nearest your place of residence. Additional information is available here.

Can I transit through a Canadian airport? Yes, but the stop cannot exceed 24 hours and you cannot connect to a domestic flight (you must arrive in and depart for your international destination from the same Canadian city). You are not permitted to leave the airport. You must have the appropriate valid travel documents for entry to Canada (an eTA, in the case of Italian citizens). For additional information on the eTA, please go to this website.

I am planning to study in Canada; am I allowed to enter? International students are allowed entry only if they possess a study permit issued before March 18, 2020. While study permit applications are being accepted (see answer above), students who have permits issued after March 18 are not yet permitted to enter the country. Additional information is available here.

For entry to Italy

I live in Canada and I would like to travel to Italy for tourism. Am I allowed? Yes. Canada is one of the countries whose residents may freely enter Italy. However, you are required to fill out a declaration that you must present to the airline company and to border authorities upon your entry to the country and you must complete 14 days of self-isolation at your final destination in Italy. For important additional information, please read the dedicated page on the website of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. For more in-depth information, please refer to this questionnaire.

All individuals planning to travel to Italy are invited to download the "Immuni" app, a new tool for tracking any potential exposure to Covid-19.
