Registration of Italian Associations Abroad

Registration of Italian Associations Abroad

In order to assess which associations are fully functioning and promote their concrete activities, a Registry of Italian Associations Abroad was established.

In compliance with the Circolare n.2 issued by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on October 9th, 2013, in order to be included on this registry, the associations must fulfill the following requirements:

- Membership of at least 25 Italian citizens who are enrolled in AIRE (Registry of Italians Resident Abroad);

- Concrete activities in line with the association’s main goals as established by its Statute and the interests of the community and members which it represents. As a consequence, this Consulate must be adequately informed by the associations on their activities and will make sure to assess these activities’ concreteness and importance for the community, on a case-by-case basis.

In order to provide such information and for all inquiries in this regard, the associations interested in enrolling in this Registry can email the Consulate at consolato.toronto@esteri.it

Please note that the representatives of the Associations participate to the indirect election of the 43 members of the CGIE (General Council of Italians Abroad) representing the Italian communities abroad, along with 20 other members appointed by the government. According to the art. 13, 1 of Legge n. 368 issued on November 6th, 1989 to establish the CGIE,

Members [of the CGIE not appointed by the government] are elected by an assembly, which is composed for each country by members of the COMITES regularly constituted in the countries listed in the attached table and by the representatives of the associations of the Italian communities.

Moreover, as specified in the art. 7, 1 of D.P.R. n. 329 (September 14th, 1998), which implements Legge n. 368,

The associations whose representatives may be chosen as members of the Assembly, must be enrolled in a specific registry at an Embassy or Consulate General, indicating the establishment date, the scope, the social capital, and the legal representatives of each association. These associations must be operating in the country for at least five years prior to the election.
