Visa requirements for Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada

Transit Visa for Permanent residents no longer necessary

The citizens of the following countries are no longer required to obtain visas for transit through Italian airports if in possession of a current Canadian Permanent Resident Card:
Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Colombia, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, Senegal, Somalia and Sri Lanka.

Short stay Visa categories for which Canadian citizens are exempt

Likewise, citizens from countries with short-term visa exemption, thus including citizens of Canada, may enter Italy for study and academic purposes, tourism, mission, business, invitations to  take part in sports events for periods up to ninety days, without the corresponding visa.

Working Holidays

The Working holidays Visa is issued on the basis of the Memorandum on youth exchanges between Italy and Canada signed in 2006 which, every year, allows to a maximum of 1250 young Canadian between 18 and 35 years of age to stay and work in Italy up to 12 months. Canadian Diplomatic and Official passports holders

Canadian citizens do not require visas when visiting Italy with Diplomatic or Official Passports for official stays of 90 days or less.
